Sashiko is an ancient Japanese mending technique. Come and explore the meaning craft behind the geometric patterns.
In this session we will explore the patterns and symbolism of Sashiko stitching: the ancient Japanese technique of mending through patching and patterned "little stab" stitching. Symbolising a range of ideas from resilience, to good fortune, this Visible Mending techniqe has found a revived popularity in the West.
Visible mending is a growing community addressing the environmental impact of the textile industry in a way that simultaneously encompasses communal mindful practice, creativity, and mending in a wholly holistic way.
Visible mending takes traditional techniques such as patching, darning and sashiko to repair clothing in an intentionally visible and creative way. With these techniques we can have another way to express ourselves creatively. The ability to express ourselves gives us agency. With agency we can feel in control to make positive choices.
With a practical skill, enjoyed in-group and individually, we can feed into the change towards a sustainable world. And the gentle, slow movement, the mindful space it gives us, allows for pause in our fast noisy lives.
This session will focus on the skill of pattern making through repeated small stitches, using a traditional pattern or your own design.
