On January 27 2027, Southampton will mark the UK’s national Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) with a commemorative event organised by the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations (University of Southampton) on behalf of the city.
Event Programme
This year, we welcome Dr Susan Cohen for a talk titled 'Challenging Prejudice: Eleanor Rathbone and her campaigning on behalf of Jewish refugees before and during the Second World War.'
The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day this year, 'No Place for Prejudice', provides a timely opportunity to consider the campaigning work on behalf of refugees, relentlessly pursued by the humanitarian activist, Eleanor Rathbone, MP, both before and during the Second World War. The majority of the people whom she championed were Jews, fleeing persecution in Nazi occupied and fascist Europe, and who were the victims of state sanctioned, unfettered prejudice and racial hatred. This talk will highlight the challenges that her proposals and actions faced at home, especially from within official circles, as she defied the norms of conventional society by supporting the unpopular cause of Jewish refugees.
Further programme information will be released in due course.
Registration
Attendance is free, and all members of the public are welcome. Attendants must register in advance.
