Meet Thomas Glave, Jamaican Writer
A Writers in Conversation event, hosted by author and associate professor, Carole Burns, and part of our Arts and Humanities Festival
Thomas will be talking with us about his new collection of writing, En Pointe, Off Kilter. It is a memoir-in-essays, based on his experiences across Jamaica, the U.S., and the U.K.—most notably as a Black and queer man, and how these identities shape his understanding of how he is perceived in the world. The collection displays considerable skill with essays whose aesthetics are no less than beautiful.
This new collection of twenty-three (23) essays builds on the geopolitical, global, literary and personal themes in Thomas's two earlier nonfiction collections and in his fiction, expanding into reflections on race and racism, Jamaica and Jamaican queer realities and recent history, British colonialism, trans-Atlantic slavery, grief, the Covid-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter, torture, sexual assault, writing in relation to activism, writers Nadine Gordimer and Stuart Hall, and more. The essays and meditations foreground lyrical, evocative language in combination with compelling explorations of human rights, history, social justice, activism, literature, and the African diaspora.
This event also forms part of the Southampton Arts and Humanities Festival, an annual festival organised by the University of Southampton each November.
