Join us for a free afternoon of stories, sound, steel pan, food and conversation celebrating Southend’s Caribbean community

Being (T)here is a creative ethnographic project by KJ Fontiverio-Hylton, a creative ethnographer and multidisciplinary artist based between Southend and London.

Built through conversations, oral histories, photography and sound, Being (T)here explores the experiences of Southend’s Caribbean community through stories of migration, memory, identity, family, belonging and what it means to make a home somewhere.

The project brings these stories together in a book and double vinyl record, creating a living archive of Caribbean life in the town through the voices and experiences of the people living it.

To celebrate the project, we’re gathering at The Old Waterworks for a relaxed afternoon centred around listening, sharing and connecting.

What’s happening;

Steel Pan Taster Session

Come and have a go at playing steel pan in a relaxed, welcoming session led by one of the people featured in Being (T)here. No previous experience is needed.

Being (T)here Listening

Hear selections from the Being (T)here double vinyl and spend time with some of the voices, stories and sounds that shaped the project.

Community Conversation

The Artist will host an informal conversation with people featured in the project, opening up stories and reflections around Caribbean culture, community, memory, identity and life in Southend. Those joining us on the day are welcome to listen, share and be part of the conversation too.

Food + Drinks + Music

There’ll also be time to eat, drink, listen to music, meet people and simply spend time together.
