Pen to Print: Little Authors & Illustrators: Make Your Own Kala Book! is scheduled for 26 October 2026 at Southend Central Library at The Forum in Southend On Sea. This free, hands-on workshop allows children aged 6 to 11 to create their own books through writing and drawing activities.
Hands‑on workshop where kids aged 6 to 11 create their own book through fun writing and drawing.
NB: Workshops include crayons, glue and glitter, so things may get a bit messy. Children should dress suitably, and sessions are ideal for ages 6 to 11.
Please only book on of two sessions:
26 October, 11am to 12pm
26 October, 12.30pm to 1.30pm
Calling all young storytellers and artists! Join Silvano Griffith‑Francis, author of the Kala series in this dynamic, hands-on workshop that invites young creators to step into the world of storytelling — writing, drawing, or both — as they design and build their very own one-of-a-kind book. In this special edition Black History Month workshop, children are inspired to reflect on what makes them unique and use this to help shape their stories.
With expert guidance and a ready-to-use book template, kids will transform their ideas into a real keepsake. Additionally, each child will receive a certificate of participation at the end, celebrating their creativity and accomplishment. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to inspire confidence in your child’s budding talents.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a UK-wide campaign designed to inspire people to make reading a regular part of their lives.
We all understand the benefits of reading and how it expands our minds, builds confidence and fuels creativity, yet fewer people are doing it. With growing distractions and limited time, reading for pleasure is declining across many groups.
This national campaign aims to change this by reconnecting reading with everyday culture. It is not about guilt or obligation, it is about showing that stories, ideas and imagination have a place in everyone’s daily life. Click here (https://goallin.org.uk/) to find out more!
