About This Event

This event at Dagnall Street Baptist Church shares first-hand accounts of early 20th-century life for manual labourers and their families on King's Road, St Albans. Tickets are priced from free to £5.00.

Enjoy first-hand accounts of what everyday life was like for manual labourers and their families in the early 20th century.

King’s Road was built in the early 20th century as mainly rented terraced housing for manual labourers and their families. By gathering together childhood recollections of some of these former residents, Judy Sutton will use first-hand accounts to describe what everyday life was like many decades ago. This lecture also outlines what this land was used for before housing, how the King’s Road houses were built and an examination of the 1921 census.

Judy Sutton is a recently retired nurse, sociology graduate and member of the SAHAAS. She has lived in King’s Road for more than forty years during which time she has amassed a large archive of her street’s social history. In the last five years she has written two books about King’s Road and led the project which resulted in the erection of King’s Road’s Great War street memorial in 2023.

This lecture will be available in person only at Dagnall Street Baptist Church. Please click on the button above right to register. You will then receive confirmation of your registration by email return. Registration closes at 3.30pm on Tuesday 17 November.
