Heritage Open Days will feature a tour of St Mary's Church, Old Town Hemel Hempstead, on 15 September 2026 at 12:30 PM. Located in St Albans, this Workshop event provides a rare opportunity to explore a 12th-century Grade I listed Norman building. Admission is free.

A rare opportunity to hear about and tour this 12th century church - a Grade I listed Norman building. Hemel Hempstead's oldest building.

Local historian Mike Stanyon leads this tour of a church steeped in history. Construction of this Norman church began around 1140 AD and finished in 1180 AD, although it has been added to and altered over the years. The Spire, added in 1340, is one of the tallest in Europe, measuring a total height of 200 feet. It is topped by a gilded weather vane.

St Mary’s contains numerous architectural features and notable memorials to local historical figures. You are welcome to stay in the Church after the tour.
