The exhibition 'History of England in 25 Poems' will take place on 17 November 2026 at St Albans Museum + Gallery. The event offers both in-person and Zoom attendance options, with in-person tickets priced at £10.00.
In- Person: £10 Zoom: £6 (The Zoom link will be sent out at 17:30 on the day of the talk. For in-person ticket holders, booking confirmation is proof-of-purchase and ticket combined.) Events , Adults Time travel into 1300 years of England’s history through remarkable poems written between the eighth century and today. Catherine Clarke takes us from the lived experience of the Black Death to the voice of an eighteenth-century housemaid, to a quiet moment of birdsong on the eve of the Great War – and more. She’ll also share a special look at some of the archival discoveries and treasures she found in her research. In-person attendees are welcome to bring a copy of the book this talk is based on for Catherine to sign after the talk. Meet The Speaker Catherine Clarke is a Professor at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, where she is also Director of the Victoria County History of England. She was previously Professor of English Literature at the University of Southampton, where she remains a Visiting Professor. A History of England in 25 Poems has been a Book of the Year in The Times , FT and History Extra , and was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week.
