About This Event

First Steps To Abstraction is a hands-on art workshop at Barnoon Arts in St Ives on 22 October 2026, beginning at 10:00. Participants will explore abstract painting techniques inspired by modernist artists and create a collection of mixed media studies. The session aims to encourage creativity and personal expression in art.

Jump in and discover how to turn simple ideas into cool abstract art in a fun, hands-on session!

First Steps To Abstraction

Take your first steps into abstract painting, drawing inspiration from St Ives modernist artists such as Patrick Heron, Wilhelmina Barns‑Graham and Terry Frost. During the morning you’ll explore a series of playful, practical exercises — including mark‑making, collage, reduction and improvisation — designed to help you loosen up, think differently, and begin shaping your own abstract style. You’ll create a collection of small studies in mixed media that feed into a more developed piece in the afternoon.

By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a notebook full of experiments and ideas, plus a finished acrylic painting on canvas.

Description supplied by the event organiser.
