About This Event

Swelen is a new exhibition by local artist Mark Whenman, presenting work from a three-year project inspired by the ancient practice of swaling on Cornwall's Lizard and Penwith peninsulas. Named after the Middle English word meaning "to burn", the exhibition explores cycles of burning, renewal and our connection to the natural world. Living on the Lizard Peninsula, Mark's practice is deeply rooted in the landscape. Working outdoors, he treats place as both studio and collaborator. Drawn to the striking forms of burnt gorse left after controlled winter burns, he developed his own process of making drawings directly with the land, rubbing, dragging and pressing paper against charred plants to capture its traces. The resulting works are powerful records of movement and touch. Created through collaboration with nature, they invite us to see ourselves not as separate from nature, but as part of it. As we face the growing climate crisis, Swelen asks us to reflect and explore change, renewal and our connection to the nature around us.
