The Cowane Centre & Theatre in Stirling will host the Cowane Sound Forum on 17 October 2026.

This workshop will explore free improvisation, i.e. music created in the moment that is not based on notation or hierarchies.

This workshop, hosted by Armin Sturm and Peter Russell, will explore free improvisation, i.e. music created in the moment that is not based on notation or hierarchies, and does not adhere to any specific style. The workshop will provide a space to try out and discuss strategies to approach improvisation in music.

We will start at 3 pm. Please be ready to play by then. There will be access to the venue from 2:30 pm).

Vocalists and players at all stages of their development welcome. Once you booked a place, please email us with details such as what instrument you will be playing and whether you will bring an amp (tone_shepherd@yahoo.com).

Pay what you can afford: To cover the venue costs, we are asking for a donation. Suggested ticket price £8, concession £6. Please feel free to chip in a bit more if you can afford it.

Armin Sturm plays double bass with the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO), Dome Riders, and Vole Invasion. Peter Russell is an improvising clarinetist who performs with Ubu Cheer Warp.
