Stratford and Moreton Tramway Experience to Celebrate 200yrs
The SMT200 Committee has arranged for a ceremony to take place on Saturday, 5th September 2026 from 9:30am at Cox’s Yard, Stratford-upon-Avon to celebrate the inaugural train of waggons departing at 10am from Stratford Tramway Wharf. 200yrs ago to the day.
The Mayor of Stratford will say a few words and unveil a plaque. There will be music, the sound of church bells, and much jollity from the assembly. Two Gentlemen of the Committee, in authentic period costume, will flag off a procession of the tour party, crossing the famous tramway bridge towards Moreton-in-Marsh, 16 and one quarter miles distant.
After a short walk to The Old Tramway Inn, we board a vintage Leyland bus to journey along the tramway route to Moreton. We stop at points of tramway interest to view its remains and to recount stories of the days when it was working. In Moreton we take luncheon at The Redesdale Arms, same rooms as the 1826 Dinner of Lord Redesdale and the Tramway Committee, and then return via Shipston Museum to view an exhibition of tramway artefacts. The tour concludes by 6:30pm at The Tramway Inn, Stratford-upon-Avon.
This is a ticketed event, and includes a collection of souvenirs, but places are limited to the capacity of the vintage tour bus.
Upon receipt of your ticket please email enquiries@shipstonmuseum.co.uk with the detail of any luncheon dietary requirements.
