On 13 October 2026, an interactive session on coaching and mentoring will be held at OsecoElfab in North Shields. Hosted by OsecoElfab and led by Professor Joanna Berry and Kate Simpson, the event explores the differences between coaching and mentoring. Participants will take part in discussions and a guided exercise using the GROW coaching model to support one another.
Explore coaching and mentoring, try a practical coaching technique, and help shape future support within AMF WOMEN.
The AMF WOMEN community brings together a wealth of professional experience, practical knowledge and different perspectives. This interactive session, hosted by OsecoElfab, is a chance to explore how we can use that experience to support one another.
Led by Professor Joanna Berry and Kate Simpson, with an introduction and closing discussion from Rachel Mansfield, the session will look at the differences between coaching and mentoring, the value of both, and the qualities that make a supportive relationship work.
You’ll take part in discussions and a guided exercise using the GROW coaching model. It’s an opportunity to practise listening and questioning, and to think about a work challenge or goal you might value support with.
What will we explore?
The differences and overlaps between coaching and mentoring
When each approach can be useful
What people gain from giving and receiving support
Listening, questioning, confidentiality and healthy boundaries
The GROW model, with a chance to try it in a small group
What mentoring or peer support opportunities AMF WOMEN could explore next
You don’t need to be a qualified coach, a senior leader or someone who has had a formal mentor. You may be interested in supporting others, looking for a fresh perspective yourself, or simply wanting to become a better listener and colleague.
We’ll finish by hearing what kinds of support members would find valuable. Ideas being considered include informal networking, peer coaching and mentoring opportunities; your feedback will help decide what happens next.
Join us at OsecoElfab from 10:00 am on Tuesday 13 October.
