' A sad and terrible history, Life and death in the Coalfields of Northumberland & Durham'.

The book is not intended to be a history of the time, rather it is based upon original ephemera, photographs and postcard images that have been left to the historian to decipher.

What emerges is shocking in its sheer brutality and complete disregard for humanity in the pursuit of profit.

Brian Godfrey

Brian was born in Nelson Village Cramlington into a coal mining family in 1951. After leaving Cramlington County Secondary School, in 1967, he worked for Cramlington Cooperative Society. In 1983 he began work for Sunderland Social Services, becoming a qualified Social Worker in 1991, working with children and families and in child protection, retiring in 2017. Brian has a lifelong interest in local history and has published seven previous works.
