Botanical Drawing with Hilary Jean Gibson
An expressive and liberating exploration of Botanical Illustration using continuous fluid line, negative space and a jigsaw of shapes. Students will use a variety of materials and techniques including aqua pens and water sprays, permanent pen, Brusho powder, dip pen, salt and wax resists.
The workshop
Please bring a lightweight folding stool or chair and an apron or old shirt.
Hilary is a Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists
The workshop will begin with a short introduction to the wonderful plant collection at Trelissick Gardens and its history.
We will explore the theme of Botanical art with various examples on Pinterest boards, including my own work as a Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists, the Drawing Society UK and the St Ives Society of Artists.
There will be demonstrations of various ways to approach drawing a botanical subject. This is not pure Botanical Illustration, however, so we will look at more expressive methods, which will be fun and liberating, including the use of a continuous fluid line, negative space, and a jigsaw of shapes.
We will go into the gardens where we can work on three A6 watercolour postcards which can be finished back in the barn.
We will explore the techniques of mark-making used in ink drawings, permanent black pen and Quink.
As well as working in line and Wash, and working onto a prepared wash background.
After lunch, we can work on a larger scale on watercolour paper, using the morning’s reference and preferred techniques.
Please bring a lightweight folding stool or chair and an apron or old shirt.
