About This Event

Brain Health – What Science Means for the Future of Dementia will take place on 12 November 2026 at Bridge House Hotel in Tullamore. The session will feature leading expert Professor Sean Kennelly discussing recent advancements in dementia research. Attendance is free.

Explore the latest breakthroughs in dementia and Alzheimer’s research with leading expert Professor Sean Kennelly during Science Week.

Ireland is currently facing a significant public health challenge, with 64,000 people living with dementia. Around 11,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, translating to roughly 30 people every single day. The vast majority of these individuals (63%) live at home within their local communities, supported by a network of over 180,000 family carers. While it is most common in older adults, about 10% of cases are young-onset dementia, affecting people under the age of 65. The landscape of dementia and Alzheimer's research has entered a transformative era, shifting from simply managing symptoms to halting the disease's underlying biology. This event with Professor Sean Kennelly, a leading expert in dementia, will explore this important health issue in an accessible and engaging way. This event will be chaired by Dr Craig Slattery and is presented in association with the University of the Third Age, global movement that offers lifelong learning and social connection for retired and semi-retired people. It is supported by Research Ireland as part of national Science Week.

Professor Kennelly is a consultant physician in geriatric and stroke medicine in Tallaght University Hospital. He is co-director of the Institute for Memory and Cognition, and director of the Cognitive Clinical Trials Unit in Tallaght University Hospital. He is clinical associate professor of Medical Gerontology in Trinity College, and a principal investigator in the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience. A fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London & Ireland, he has extensively published in his main research areas of ageing, brain health and dementia. He has served as chief and principal investigator on several international clinical trials in early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. He chairs the interdisciplinary Dementia Research Network Ireland (DRNI) and is a member of the clinical and research advisory panel for the Alzheimer's Society Ireland. He is a faculty member for the Global Brain Health Institute in Trinity College Dublin.
