About This Event

Launch of a trio exhibition exploring mythology, ritual, body and the state. Join us for the launch of Shambles, a trio exhibition exploring mythology, ritual, body and the stateat Horrocks Gallery, Spinners Mill, Leigh. Book your free place or just turn up! Presented by Seeing Things. Three artists with three new bodies of work. Klaire Doyle’s new work considers teeth as objects of ritual and belief. Her installation is influenced by oral history, ancient history, allegorical and fairy tales attached to human teeth. She draws from the traditions of morbid anatomy and Catholic reliquaries, alongside sacred and magical sites such as stone circles, to build on the layers of mysticism about human teeth that are lost, retained, and imagined through a hypothetical third set. Anna FC Smith has created a sculptural installation, animation and ceramics in her obsession with the symbol of the ancient Wigan Moot Hall, the image of which can be spotted all over Wigan. She is looking at the rituals and practices around this early form of local community organisation - how a society created and enacted systems to function as a whole. The works reimagine the manner that medieval communities embodied their ideas of political structures and how interlinked their idea of the body politic was with the chaotic market, the butchers' shambles and the guilds. She is creating a visceral mythology, transforming her research into what it feels to form an organised society body. Matthew Wood has created imposing large-scale drawings which play on double vision, repetition and movement. His works mimic speed, and explore themes of excess, celebrity and conspiracy. He is intrigued by the concept of glamer, an archaic word meaning a magic spell or an illusory visual deception, that is the direct historical origin of the modern word “glamour”. ----- Other Shmables workshops and events: Sunday 18th Oct at 3.30pm - TEETH: A Drawing Workshop.
