Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980, R.E.M. was a key band in the college radio-driven underground music scene, known for their jangly guitar sound and poetic lyrics. Stipe's distinctive vocals and the band's genre-bending style have garnered a dedicated following in the UK, where they headlined several festivals and toured extensively throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
