Oliver McGowan Mandatory Tier 2 Training

Part 2 of the Oliver McGowan mandatory training on learning disability and autism is mandatory for ALL CLINICAL NHS and social care staff.

This event is for booking a place on Part 2, Tier 2 of the Oliver McGowan Training (a full-day, in-person interactive training session).

LDSS funding is claimable for the Mandatory Oliver McGowan tier 2 training until 31st March 2027.

Please note: Ticket price includes your full day training, tea, coffee and refreshments, lunch, your certificate on the day and access to the beautiful grounds at Hill Close Gardens in Warwick. It does not include parking.

Designed for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.

I am a pharmacy professional as well as a registered and accredited provider of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 2. My certificate is available on request and I am listed on the NHS registered approved trainers for this course.

This one-day training course is designed to equip health and social care staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality and person-centred care for individuals with learning disabilities and autism.

The training is suitable for all staff members involved in providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities and autism.

This training will equip your staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver person-centred care.

The training is named after Oliver McGowan, a young man whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better skills, knowledge and understanding of the needs for autistic people and people with a learning disability.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 2 is designed to align with the learning outcomes set out in the DHSC document "Right to be Heard" (2019) and the Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting People with a Learning Disability and Supporting Autistic People.

The one-day course consists of two essential components:

Learning Disability Session (Morning)

Autism Session (Afternoon)

Learning Disability Session

Aim: Enhance learners' understanding of learning disabilities, best practices in health and social care settings, and how this is supported by current legislation.

Objectives:

Acknowledge and understand unconscious biases to avoid diagnostic overshadowing.

Learn from the insights gained through

Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews (LeDeR), including co-morbidities.

Promote awareness of campaigns such as Stop the Over Medication of People with a Learning Disability (STOMP) and Stopping Over-Medication of People with a learning disability, autism, or both (STAMP).

Review The Equality Act 2010 and understand the importance of reasonable adjustments.

Comprehend the appropriate use of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

Learn when to apply Do Not Attempt Cardiovascular Resuscitation (DNACPR).

Autism Session (Afternoon Session)

Aim: Enhance learners' understanding of autism, best practices in health and social care settings, and how this is supported by current legislation.

Objectives:

Understand why autism is described as an invisible condition.

Reflect on personal values and beliefs in relation to autism.

Recognise the unique strengths and challenges faced by autistic individuals.

Identify potential triggers for anxiety in autistic individuals.

Identify reasonable adjustments and ways to adapt practices to better support autistic individuals.

Familiarise with relevant legislation and resources to promote inclusive enabling services.

Please note: this event is for those who need to provide care and support for autistic people or those with a learning disability e.g. clinicians / professionals / citizen & patient-facing colleagues.
