At the Altar

At the Altar is a worship gathering created to mark a significant personal milestone while giving something meaningful back to the community.

On Saturday 10th October, I, Dhonté, will celebrate my 30th birthday. As a Praise Team Lead, teacher and someone deeply shaped by those who have poured into me, I wanted to celebrate in a way that reflects what matters most to me: God, community, worship and pouring into others.

Rather than simply celebrating my birthday, my desire is to bring an offering.

At the Altar is an invitation to pause, reflect and return to the heart of worship. In the midst of life’s pressures, distractions and expectations, the altar represents a place where we can lay down what we have been carrying, surrender it to God and come before Him with gratitude, humility and worship.

At the heart of the evening is collective worship. This is not about watching musicians and singers perform, but creating a space where everyone can worship together. The platform is not the focus. God is. Every song, voice and musical contribution is simply an offering that helps create space for people to encounter Him.

The evening will also bring together people who have played an important role in shaping my journey and those who continue to pour into others through music and ministry. I am where I am today because people invested in me, believed in me and gave me opportunities to grow.

That same principle shapes my work as a teacher in a special educational needs (SEN) setting. I have seen firsthand the power of opportunity, encouragement and investment, and how they can change the direction of a life.

That is why At the Altar is not only about celebration. It is also about giving back.

Money raised through ticket sales and donations will go directly to ASNA, a church organisation supporting individuals with special educational needs. The event is being self-funded because my desire is not to make a profit, but to use my 30th birthday as an opportunity to pour into others in the same way so many people have poured into me.

At 30, I want my celebration to have a purpose beyond myself.

I want to celebrate the One who has carried me, thank God for the people He has placed around me, honour those who have helped shape my journey, create opportunities for others to be encouraged, and ultimately leave something behind that can bless somebody else.

At the Altar is a celebration, but it is also an offering.

An offering of worship.

An offering of gratitude.

An offering of community.

An offering of service.

And an offering back to God for all that He has done.

My prayer is simple: that nobody simply comes to watch, but that everyone comes ready to worship, to receive, to reflect, and to bring their own offering to the altar.
