About This Event

The Legends of the Canal workshop and walk will take place at Smethwick Library in Wolverhampton on 19 September 2026. The event is a family-friendly activity that allows participants to imagine mythical creatures living in the canal. Admission is free.

A family workshop and walk.

The canal is already home to otters, foxes, hedgehogs and kingfishers — so what mythical creature would you dream up to live there? In this family workshop, imagine your own canal-dwelling creature, write its story, and turn it into an interactive drawing you can take with you. Then bring it to life: we'll walk part of the canal trail together, spotting the artworks along the way and letting your creature loose on its new home.

Best suited to ages 6+, with a colouring and drawing station on hand for younger visitors.

About the artist: Sharonjit Kaur Sutton is a Birmingham-based multidisciplinary artist, designer and co-founder of the South Asian Arts Collective (SAAC), whose practice spans graphic design, painting and conceptual projects exploring cultural identity and heritage.

A Canal and River Trust Project, Smethwick Imaginarium is a place-based arts programme celebrating the cultural diversity, canal heritage and community spirit of Smethwick. Six artists working across photography, performance, poetry, graphic design, sculpture and curation are collaborating with local residents and community organisations to co-create work that explores the role of the Galton Valley Canal in our community. The programme launched in February 2026 with free creative workshops at Smethwick Library and canal activities in partnership with Brasshouse Community Centre. Throughout summer and autumn, artists will share their work at public moments along the canal and in local venues, culminating in a celebratory festival.

A Canal & River Trust project funded by Arts Council England and through funds raised by players of Postcode Lottery. Delivered in partnership with North Smethwick Development Trust, Smethwick Interfaith Friends Group, Smethwick Library and Ikon Slow Bloat.
