The Vegetative Grass Identification - Beginners Workshop is scheduled for 13 November 2026 at Lower Smite Farm Nature Reserve in Hindlip. Participants will learn to identify common vegetative grasses in a hands-on setting, with no prior knowledge required.
Learn how to identify common vegetative grasses like a boss in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop. No previous knowledge required!
Course Overview
Grasses form a fundamental component of many habitats, yet they have a reputation as being tricky to identify and are often under-recorded, especially when they aren't in flower. If you've ever found yourself staring blankly at recently mown grass, not knowing where to start with your species list, hear me out...
This practical, one-day workshop aims to demystify the identification of the most widely encountered grasses in the Midlands using solely vegetative methods, with no prior botanical knowledge required (I tested it on my mum, she now knows False Oat-grass from her Cock's-foot).
The workshop combines practical classroom exercises with hands-on time inspecting potted specimens and is followed by an outdoor field session. Throughout the day you will build the confidence to accurately identify common grasses both in the classroom and in the field, using a colour-coded, simplified key inspired by The Vegetative Key to the British Flora by John Poland.
What will be covered?
The day is split between classroom learning and outdoor practice, and includes the following key elements:
An overview of the most widely recorded grasses in the Midlands
Understanding the anatomy and structure of grasses and learning exactly where to find vegetative tillers, sheaths, ligules, auricles, and folded or rolled young growth
Selecting the right plant material for successful vegetative identification
How to correctly use a hand lens to find and examine critical features like ligules and auricles.
Using botanical keys by making note of crucial features and practicing keying out different species, plus step-by-step guidance on using our simplified botanical key
Guaranteed hands-on experience with 10–20 potted specimens in the classroom to get to grips with basic anatomy and common species, before getting your eye in during the field session.
A field session in the afternoon at Lower Smite Farm to test your new skills out in the field and practice identifying grasses in their natural habitats
By the end of the day, you will be able to:
Confidently identify the Top 10 most widespread grasses of the Midlands, using the simplified key and vegetative features to tell them apart.
Locate and assess key vegetative features using a hand lens
Confidently select suitable plant specimens for identification
Successfully navigate and apply a simplified vegetative botanical key
Be able to use the simplified key handout to key out 30+ common species independently
Have the confidence to consider using more complex resources, such as Poland’s Vegetative Key to the British Flora or Hilary Wallace’s 'Grasses: A Guide to Identification Using Vegetative Characters'

This course, and this kind of vegetative botanising wouldn't be anywhere near as accessible if it weren't for the work of John Poland, Eric Clement and later Hilary Wallace. I frequently say that if I could carry only one botany book, it would be 'The Veg Key' by Poland - whilst Wallace is another excellent and highly recommended resource.
So, if you are feeling inspired, but don't want to buy a ticket, I'd encourage you to go and buy the following books, get to know them inside out and you'll be a vegetative botany wizard in no time:
Grasses: A Guide to Identification Using Vegetative Characters (AIDGAP) - Hilary Wallace, 2022
The Vegetative Key to the British Flora – A new approach to plant identification. 2nd edition - John Poland, 2020
