Engage in hands-on learning that promotes both creativity and ecological consciousness.

Learn how to make your own sustainable handmade gifts that make perfect Christmas presents!

Join Laura from L & S Crafts at the beautiful Howsham Mill between York and Malton for a fun day learning how to make simple yet effective crafts that make perfect gifts for Christmas or other occasions.

Craft 1 - Natural firelighters

In this session you will learn how to make natural firelighters that are both practical and a beautiful addition to the home. You will be able to choose your own botanical embellishments to add to the base of wax, wood shavings and other recycled elements. While they are setting we will craft a box to gift them in. These make a perfect gift for those with a fire-pit or log burner.

Craft 2 - Rolled beeswax candles

In this session from our Wild Harvest collection you will learn about the many benefits of natural beeswax candles. We will show you how to make different styles of rolled beeswax candles, including the classic dinner candle or pillar, and the more unusual spiral candles. You will be able to choose from a selection of natural or coloured pure beeswax sheets to combine with cotton wick to make three tall dinner candles (or equivalent). You will decorate your finished candles with your choice of dried botanicals, gorgeous ribbons and pretty stamped gift tags.

Craft 3 - Willow weaving

In this session you will be led through the creative process involved to turn this natural material into a beautiful rustic item that can be used as a bird feeder for your garden or, alternatively, to store garlic! Willow weaving requires a reasonable level of hand strength and dexterity, however this is a short project where you can go at your own pace and so is suitable for most people. Please contact us if you would like to discuss before booking.

This relaxing day is perfect for beginners and all equipment and materials, as well as hot drinks, will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy either indoors or outside in the lovely woodland surroundings.

The venue has free parking and composting toilets. Please note Howsham Mill itself is approximately 1/4 mile walk from the carpark along an uneven path. We recommend that you wear comfortable footwear that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy.

Minimum age for participants is 18 years.

Before booking, please read our Terms & Conditions and Privacy Notice. Please note, the venue does flood very occasionally causing courses to be cancelled. In the event of this occurring, a full refund would be available.
