On Maundy Thursday, the atmosphere at Selby Abbey in York was electric for what would become a memorable musical experience. The service, led by the choir, honored the Last Supper and featured Renewal of Christian Discipleship. Following the service, the stripping of the altar created an evocative finale to this spiritually charged evening.
The service will focus on the Last Supper and include the Renewal of Christian Discipleship. It will be led by the choir and will be a sung Eucharist. The stripping of the altars and other church furnishings will follow, leaving the Abbey bare and unadorned in preparation for Good Friday.
The service will be a poignant and evocative finale to the evening, and attendees are invited to stay for a quiet prayer vigil until 10pm if they wish. This will provide a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere for those who wish to reflect on the significance of the Last Supper and the events leading up to Easter.
The event is free, with a retiring collection.
