The International Politics of Soldier Exchange in the Russo-Ukrainian War: Military Families, States and International Institutions.

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (Sept 2026- Aug 2029), this project explores the human dimension of soldier exchange in the Russo-Ukrainian war, with a special focus on the agency of women in military families. Working with the Institute of International Relations (https://www.iir.cz/en/) (Prague) and peace-building organisation, International Alert (https://www.international-alert.org/contact-us/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=6467314248&gbraid=0AAAAADoM3ZnTWYCCKmfsu9wa87W3xez88&gclid=CjwKCAiAqabXBhBUEiwAw_SQpT83egzm2yGdvkeOl1FKcw0JLRYtwX-L_tom-g3uIlcMBK-c0KTnWxoCSnAQAvD_BwE), and also partnering with Scotland-based organisations, the UN House Scotland (https://www.unhscotland.org.uk/) and Beyond Borders Scotland (https://www.beyondbordersscotland.com/projects/women-in-conflict/): Women in Conflict, the project aims to advance our understanding of this under-studied process and to provide research-informed policy recommendations to support practitioners, humanitarian organisations, civil society initiatives and families affected by conflict.

The Aberdeen launch is co-hosted with the Institute for Conflict, Transition, and Peace Studies.

Meet the project’s three investigators: Dr Jenny Mathers, Aberystwyth University; Dr Natasha Danilova, Aberdeen University; and Dr Katerina Krulisova, Nottingham Trent University. Learn more about the project and join in the discussion over coffee and cake.

The project draws on themes discussed in The Conversation focused on military wives' protest (https://www.abdn.ac.uk/staffpages/update/research/Russian%20soldiers%E2%80%99%20wives%20are%20increasingly%20outspoken%20in%20their%20opposition) in Russia, Open Democracy (https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.opendemocracy.net%2Fen%2Fodr%2Frussia-ukraine-anti-war-movement-military-women-mothers-wives%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cn.danilova%40abdn.ac.uk%7Cd051ab0bc2cf4389e8af08df390214dc%7C8c2b19ad5f9c49d490773ec3cfc52b3f%7C0%7C0%7C639292353233664824%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=HXHoa0yIpG%2BQe9UHJhEoZcJ57zw%2BDSRoXJ2P6vg%2BbKc%3D&reserved=0)and The Conversation (https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheconversation.com%2Fukraine-war-why-russian-soldiers-mothers-arent-demonstrating-the-strong-opposition-they-have-in-previous-conflicts-196605&data=05%7C02%7Cn.danilova%40abdn.ac.uk%7Cd051ab0bc2cf4389e8af08df390214dc%7C8c2b19ad5f9c49d490773ec3cfc52b3f%7C0%7C0%7C639292353233635532%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=xk%2FwTXgEonh80K3I5PgWj5OJ9i6Rn5iiseXMAUv%2BQq0%3D&reserved=0).
