An early evening session sharing artwork from the LUNZ programme, with film and spoken word performances and a panel discussion.

Come along to this creative showcase to find out how artists have worked with other researchers as they delve into questions of land use, net zero, nature and transitions in farming and land management practices. The event will be held in the impressive JHI Immersive suite, which with large-scale wrap around visuals is the first of its kind in the UK.

The artworks reflect on issues ranging from peat restoration to tree planting, and from farmers’ visions of the future to the centring of soil in human-land relationships.

Following the showcase, there will be a panel discussion exploring art and artists in multi-disciplinary research.

Each artist takes a different approach, and has been involved in a unique collaboration with other researchers and practitioners. What have they learnt? How does this work shape future directions of research? And what would you like to ask them?

This is a limited capacity event, so book your ticket early to ensure you’ll get a place.

Light snacks will be provided.

The showcase will begin at 5pm. Guests are invited to arrive from 4.45pm for networking and snacks.

Background to the contributions

JUSTLANZ Creative Visions Workshop Artefacts

JUSTLANZ is one of the LUNZ projects which aims to develop transformative pathways for a just transition to net zero for the UK food- farming sector, considering local, regional and national priorities. In these sessions two national cases explored creative visioning outputs developed from transdisciplinary workshops held at the Lauder Hills and Lough Erne. Each workshop explored desired visions for the food and farming systems within their landscapes in the context of fair outcomes for a just transition to net zero emissions. Scotland (The Lauder Hills)

Dr Katie Ailes from the spoken word production organisation I am Loud will present 'Cattle and Curlews' - inspired by the vision of the farmers and food-farm businesses from the Lauder Hills JUSTLANZ research project alongside film footage produced as part of the project.

Northern Ireland (Lough Erne)

Introduced by farmer engagement officer and art therapist Genene Hunter, award-winning author LG Thomson will read excerpts with commentary from ‘The Sound of Fermanagh’ a narrative triptych that tells the story of a desired future for food and farming systems in transition to net zero at Lough Erne Northern Ireland.

The PLACE Collective

The PLACE Collective, led by Harriet Fraser and Rob Fraser (somewhere nowhere), brings artists into research and practice around land use and environmental research. Their participation in the LUNZ Hub has led to a number of films, poems and other creative outputs.

Creative Collaborative Placements

This event will include some of the outputs from the LUNZ Hub’s Creative Collaborative Placements (CCP) programme (https://theplacecollective.org/lunz-hub-artist-placements/). This was initiated in 2025, giving a framework for artists from all four UK nations to join specialists from research, practice and policy, and to develop work in response to a specified topic.

In England, multi-media artist Daksha Patel liaised with the Rothamsted Institute, with a research focus on supporting agroecosystem transitions in the context of a changing world. Daksha’s film ‘If Not Now’ emerged from this partnership. The second film being shown has been created by artist duo Becky Little and Tom Morton (Rebearth/Arc) who have worked with James Hutton Institute and farmers and land managers to explore The earth beneath our feet: understanding, regenerating, connecting. Becky and Tom will be joining the event to introduce extracts from their film, and join the panel discussion.
