Start point: Britannia Inn, Elterwater
Length: 11km (6.8 miles) with 540m (1770ft) of ascent
Time: 5.5 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 5 (see grade description below)
A challenging walk that begins in Elterwater and follows the Cumbria Way to the end of the Great Langdale Valley. From here the route climbs steeply to the col between Side Pike and Lingmoor, along the wide ridge to the summit of Lingmoor (469m) before descending back to Elterwater.
Paths are generally good but there are some sections that may be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather. There are some steep sections including one with a short scamble and other features such as stiles on the route.
Grade 5 walks are our most challenging full day walks which involve going onto the fell summits. These walks require a good level of fitness and full walking kit appropriate for the weather conditions. Some people may find walking poles useful. You may encounter sustained climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces can be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, irregular steps, stiles or narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
Public transport: The 516 bus (Kendal ⇄ Dungeon Ghyll) stops in Elterwater.
