Hypotension is common under anaesthesia, but fluids aren't always the answer. Explore the physiology behind falling blood pressure, how to identify what might be driving it, and when to reach for a vasopressor or inotrope. We'll unpack the pharmacology of commonly used cardiovascular drugs and how to choose the right intervention for the patient in front of you.

Fluids: When, What & How Much?

Move beyond maintenance rates and shock rates. We'll explore fluid responsiveness, resuscitation and replacement, choosing the right fluid for the job, and recognising when more fluid may actually do more harm than good. A practical update on making smarter fluid therapy decisions during anaesthesia.

Pressure, Perfusion & the Patient: Putting It Into Practice

Now it's time to put the theory into practice. Work through real-world anaesthesia cases where the blood pressure is falling and the answer isn't always another fluid bolus. We'll interpret the information in front of us, identify what might be driving the hypotension and decide whether our patient needs fluids, a vasopressor, an inotrope – or something else entirely.

Blood Gases: Interpretation to Intervention

Blood gases can look intimidating, but interpretation doesn't need to be complicated. Develop a systematic approach to assessing ventilation, oxygenation, acid-base status, electrolytes and lactate before taking the most important step: deciding what the results actually mean for your anaesthetic plan and patient management.

Lines, Lines, Lines! Central & Arterial Access

Time to get hands-on! This practical session focuses on the techniques, equipment and anatomy involved in placing arterial and central venous catheters. Build confidence with vascular access and explore how these lines can expand the monitoring and treatment options available for our more challenging anaesthesia patients.

Nose to Tail: Anaesthesia for the Critical Patient

What happens when your patient has more than one problem? Working nose to tail, we'll tackle challenging anaesthesia cases where there's rarely one perfect answer. Bring together physiology, pharmacology, monitoring, fluid therapy and everything we've covered throughout the day to decide what matters most, what you're going to do about it and what you'll do when the plan doesn't work.
