Joint meeting with UMS and BCH
Damian Fogarty is a Consultant Kidney physician (nephrologist) in the Regional
Nephrology and Transplant Unit, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and Honorary
Professor of Medicine in the Centre for Public Health, Queen’s University of Belfast.
He trained in Belfast and Boston (Harvard & Joslin Diabetes Centre) before returning to
consultant posts in 2000 in Antrim then a joint appointment Senior Lecturer post with
QUB (2002-2014). He has a long term clinical and research interest in Chronic Kidney
Disease and it’s interface with other chronic conditions especially hypertension,
diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
He has held a variety of leadership roles such as Medical Director of the UK Renal
Registry from 2010-14, Clinical Advisor to HSC Business Services Organisation (2015-
16) and Clinical Director of the regional unit (2018-21) and Northern Ireland’s
representative to UK Kidney Association and Irish Society of Nephrology. His clinical
and research projects have resulted in over 140 published papers, a number of meta-

His clinical focus has been across all areas of renal medicine but in the last 10 years he
has led a focus on earlier CKD management with interface working alongside a range
of colleagues but especially general practice teams using enhanced triage and prompt
advice services. Using evidenced based interventions this has led to greatly reduced
waiting times & outcome avoidance. Outside work & family life he relaxes by organizing
and ‘quietly’ participating in a twice-weekly football game.
