A 1-day practical course introducing working with lime

This workshop led by The Rock Stone Masonry will provide an introduction to working with lime. Participants will gain hands-on practical experience in mixing and use of lime mortars and will get to try their hand at repointing stonework. All materials and lunch will be provided. No experience necessary!

Who should attend?

This session is for anyone who has an interest in working with lime mortar, who would like the opportunity to have a go and pick up basic skills. This course will be of interest to owners of older buildings, as well as built environment professionals. No experience is required, and the course will be led by experienced stonemasons, with extensive experience of working with historic buildings and structures.

Important information for attendees:

This event is limited to a maximum of fifteen attendees to maximise safety and opportunities to learn from the craftspeople. Attendees should wear sensible footwear, and it is advised that attendees wear warm clothing/ layers and bring appropriate outerwear in case of rain. You may wish to wear old clothes or overalls to prevent clothing getting dirty or damaged. PPE will be provided. There are regular buses to Glenarm from Ballymena and Larne. There is also parking available on site.

Trainers Overview:

The course will be led by the skilled and experienced team at The Rock Stone Masonry. They have worked on many historic buildings and structures, including the maintenance and repair of Glenarm estate, Queens university, Stranmillis College, Hillsborough Castle, and various council and privately owned listed and scheduled properties. They also undertake bespoke commissions such as sculptures and carvings.

Additionally, they are experienced trainers and facilitators. They have provided training courses through and with Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), Lough Erne Landscape Partnership and Hearth Historic Building Trust.
