A four-week course exploring the building blocks of musical improvisation

Ever wanted to try musical improv, or started exploring it and want to build a stronger foundation?

This four-week evening course explores the core skills of musical improvisation, giving performers the tools and confidence to spontaneously create songs, scenes and stories.

We'll work on finding the musical impulse in a scene, developing characters and stories through song, creating strong choruses, and working together as an ensemble. We'll also explore musical theatre styles and conventions, giving you practical tools to make your improvised songs feel more theatrical and purposeful.

The emphasis is on playing, experimenting and building confidence. Whether you're completely new to musical improv or you've already attended a workshop or two, this is a chance to develop your skills in a supportive and fun environment.

No singing or musical training is required. Some previous improv experience is welcome, but not necessary.

Places are limited to ensure everyone gets plenty of time on their feet and individual attention throughout the course.

About the Facilitators

Declan King is an improvisor, theatre maker and facilitator who performs regularly in Belfast. He has trained in musical improvisation with Showstopper! The Improvised Musical in London and draws on this training in his teaching and coaching. He also has experience in devised theatre, physical performance, puppetry and magic.

Eddie Goodwin is an improvisor and musician who regularly accompanies musical improv performances and workshops in Belfast. He has accompanied local and international musical improv teams, bringing a highly responsive and playful approach to live accompaniment.
