A community screeing of this lauded documentary as part of the TUC's "Young Worker Month".
Doors open 18:30. Film starts 17:00.
Up against one of the most powerful companies on the planet, a group of Amazon workers embark on an unprecedented campaign to unionize their warehouse in Staten Island, New York. Documenting the struggle in intimate cinéma vérité, UNION presents a gripping human drama about the fight for dignity in today's globalized economic landscape.
UNION seeks to give a realistic report on the harsh reality of the imbalence of power between the grassroots and the economic elite.
The filmakers say: "...we felt torn between the exciting potential of collective power and the sober assessment of just how massive the obstacles are in the way of transformative change. Now, while materially it feels that little has changed since 2020, and in certain respects, conditions have become more dire - we cannot take for granted the massive shift in consciousness and fiery spark of resurgent energy in the labor movement as a powerful, immeasurable force to be reckoned with. We invite our audiences to wrestle with these contradictions,...".
We ask supporters to register for tickets so that we can keep track of the numbers interested. Hopefully, there will also be space during the evening for some disussion of the issues raised - in partcular, about how we build Trade Union membership in those areas of the British economy that have grown in the wake of deindustrialisation and declining Union density.
