RNLI x To Be Adorned Knitting for beginners

Always wanted to give knitting a go, or fancy refreshing your craft skills with yarn and needles? Come and learn the basics at this RNLI-funded workshop as part of RNLI Stories of Courage 1939-45.

In this two hour session we'll cover:

Casting on

How to knit

How to purl

Casting off

All the essential skills you need to start your knitting journey! You'll be provided with a To Be Adorned knitting starter kit to keep, including beautiful British wool yarn and a pair of knitting needles, to start working your way through making a stitch sampler. We all learn at different paces, so you'll also leave with access to exclusive knitting how-to videos to re-watch in your own time.

During the Second World War, knitting became a way for those on the Home Front to contribute to the war effort, including keeping RNLI crew members warm when out at sea.

Where?

The workshop will run at the RNLI College in Poole, the home of RNLI training where lifeboat volunteers from across the UK and Ireland are trained to become crew members. Meet in Reception for this workshop. Tea and coffee included!

The RNLI's Stories of Courage 1939-45 project explores the charity's Second World War stories, sharing how crews continued to save lives at sea in extraordinary condition. This includes looking at the role of women, who have always contributed to the lifesaving in different ways: fundraising, helping launch boats, and knitting items of kit for crew members. From seaboot stockings to steering gloves, the knitwear created by women at the home front were a vital layer to keep lifeboat volunteers warm during rescues in all weathers, often for extended periods of time.

This is an adults only session, not suitable for children.

This workshop is hosted by local knit and crochet designer Becca from To Be Adorned. Spaces are limited for the event - please let us know ASAP if you are no longer able to attend so we can make your spot available.
