Join sports historian John Dewhirst for a lively dive into the Victorian roots of Bradford’s sporting obsession!

Nowadays sport plays a large part in people's lives, and Bradford is no exception, with active participation as both players and spectators. The affairs of the city's two senior clubs - Bradford City and Bradford Bulls - command attention not only from those attending games at Valley Parade and Odsal Stadium, but also from those who follow them remotely, within the district and across the globe. Both clubs also play a significant role in promoting the city.

The origins of the Bulls and City date back to the nineteenth century, when their antecedents - Manningham FC and Bradford FC - competed as rugby union sides. To the Victorians, the term 'football' embraced different codes: rugby on the one hand, and association football (or soccer) on the other.

In Bradford, the obsession with football began with the launch of the Yorkshire County Cup in 1876, reaching a climax in 1884 when Bradford FC, based at Park Avenue, won the competition and brought the trophy to Bradford for the first time. It was an achievement that made football fashionable in the district, attracting unprecedented crowds, generating column inches in local newspapers and prompting the formation of junior sides across the Bradford area. It also gave impetus to the local sale of football collector cards and to the pioneering business of John Baines in Manningham. The cup victory proved to be a momentous development in shaping urban life and pastimes.

Enthusiasm for association and rugby football in Bradford continued through the twentieth century and into the present day. Local sports historian and author John Dewhirst will talk about how the obsession with 'football' began in Bradford, its impact on the district, and how it has persisted. He will discuss the origin of organised sport in the town and the early history of Bradford Cricket Club, the adoption of the round ball game at Valley Parade and Park Avenue, and the co-existence of different clubs - Avenue, City, Northern and 'Bradford Rugby' - in the city, as well as how the Bulls and City have actively promoted community connections.
