A community event asking 'Do we have to care about strangers?' is held at the Lion and Lobster in Brighton on 14 October 2026. The social portion begins at 18:30, followed by a topic discussion at 19:30. While the event is free, attendees are asked to purchase a drink to support the venue.
Meeting at 18:30 for the social and then the topic starts at 19:30 The social is un-hosted, so bring reading material in case nobody shows up. At 19:30 the focus will be on the topic so please try to link your thoughts and arguments to the topic :-) No knowledge of philosophy is necessary. This is a safe place for people to speak openly so you need to be able to tolerate potentially extreme and disturbing ideas/opinions that you may not agree with. An open minded attitude is all that is required You do not have to speak unless you want to. Just listening is entirely acceptable. This is, as always, a free event however, unless you really cannot afford it, **please purchase a drink to keep the venue happy,** or we will lose it. Guidance for a good event: 1. Start talking about the topic at 19:30 (independently, even if the host isn't there) 2. Try to stay on topic (or close to it) for the 2 hours dedicated to it 3. If the same people are speaking too much, try to let others speak (also by using the egg timer or other object to do a circle) Ps. If you are in the middle of a game when the topic starts at 19:30, please move into the area of the main pub. The private room is booked **only** for the philosophy meetup and for the purpose of discussing the topic. If anyone would like to make/advertise an event for free on this group, let us know (philosophy or culture related so pretty much anything: movies, documentaries, poetry night, singing, book club, reading evenings, museum trips, religion related, music concerts, historic, spiritual stuff, dance nights or whatever else you can think of) https://www.facebook.com/groups/2720937008174836
