Advice 101 Training: Welfare Benefits Advice

10.00 - 13.00 Thursday 10 September. Wellspring Settlement, Training Room 2, Ducie Road.

This course is designed for front line support workers and volunteers who do not specialise in advice (e.g a social prescriber, community outreach worker or community/warm space staff) and other professionals who offer ongoing support to clients in need.

This popular Advice 101 session, delivered by the North Bristol Advice Centre, provides a clear understanding of the services available to help clients and how to effectively access them. This welfare benefits course provides a structured, jargon free overview of the welfare benefits system to equip learners with the relevant ,knowledge, skills and expertise to confidently, and competently answer routine welfare benefit related questions and queries.

The course content is succinct and has been designed to meet the needs of professionals with limited or no prior experience of the welfare benefit system. In particular, the course aims to provide participants with a basic knowledge and understanding of the following:

the structure of the UK benefits system

the key differences between the different types of benefits

the eligibility criteria for the main benefits

the basics of Universal Credit

how to dispute decisions about benefits

By the end of this course, attendees will feel confident in guiding clients to the right support while working within their professional boundaries.
