Learn the traditional craft of hedgelaying with CPRE's Hedgerow Heroes!

Become a Hedgerow Hero by joining us to learn the traditional craft of hedgelaying.

Hedgelaying helps to rejuvenate old, etablished hedgerows stimulating strong new growth and improving the condition of the hedge. A well-managed hedge can continue to provide benefits for people and wildlife for tens - or even hundreds - of years.

In this improvers* session participants will be guided by local professional hedgelayer, Mike Reed, to lay a hedge in the North Somerset style.

*If this is your first time laying a hedge, please book onto one of our Beginner sessions.

All tools and equipment will be provided but attendees should have their own footwear and clothing suitable for working outdoors in inclement weather.

About the day

We use the What3Words app to provide an accurate location for these sessions - we will meet at ///cool.rapid.messy (https://what3words.com/cool.rapid.messy) at 9:45am and the session will begin at 10:00am.

We will assess the section of hedge to be laid and discuss the process and benefits of laying a hedge, before looking at tools and techniques. Mike will give a practical demonstration before the group is split into pairs, each with a section of hedge to work on.

Tea and coffee will be provided, but participants will need to bring their own lunch.

Please note that there is no shelter or toilet facilities at this site and that those arriving by car will need to find on-street parking in the local area.

Tickets and Cost

Places on these workshops are strictly limited so that we can supervise the group and keep everyone safe. You may not book multiple tickets and you may not take part without booking a ticket.

Thanks to generous support from South Gloucestershire Council we are able to offer these sessions without charging a ticket price.

However, if you would like to make a donation towards Hedgerow Heroes this will help us to offer more opportunities like this one. A workshop like this typically costs around £80 per person but donations of any amount will be gratefully received.
