About This Event

An archaeological tour, An archaeological journey through the Fens, will take place at Cambridge Central Library in Cambridge on 2026-09-25. The tour will explore the rich history of archaeological and palaeoecological research in the Fens with Dr. Phil Stastney.

A whistle-stop tour through the rich history of archaeological and palaeoecological research in the Fens, with Dr. Phil Stastney

Through this fascinating and engaging talk, discover how the human history of Fenland, past, present and future, ties in with the complex layers of sediments and peats that characterise this region.

Phil Stastney will share findings from the Fenscapes Project, an initiative hosted at Cambridge University's McDonald Institute, which reveal that the landscape, environment, soils and sediments not only shaped past human lives in the Fens, but also shape our present-day understanding of the region’s heritage, and may suggest directions and priorities for future investigations.

Phil Stastney is a Senior Research Associate at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research in Cambridge, where he co-leads the Fenscapes project. Phil’s career path has included the raised bogs of central Ireland, and the deep sediment sequences of the Lower Thames Valley, through stints in commercial excavations across southern and eastern England, giving him a background in geoarchaeology, wetland palaeoecology and landscape archaeology.

This talk is offered in partnership with Cambridge University's Centre for Landscape Regeneration. Please look out for more talks which will be added to our Fenland Folk: Heritage and Landscape series.

The talk will take place in the Conference Room on the 3rd Floor of Cambridge Central Library.

There is a lift to the 3rd Floor and accessible toilets on this level. For more information about accessibility and parking please visit Cambridgeshire Online | Cambridge Central Library
