The assessment of geopolitical risk for commercial purposes is probably as old as history itself, but the ‘Risk Industry’ appears to be a relatively new phenomenon. Shell may have had its own in-house political risk analysis unit since 1965, but many other companies are still in the early stages of understanding how political issues affect their business. An EY Parthenon 2021 survey of over a thousand C-Suite executives revealed that about a third of businesses are proactive in identifying, assessing and managing political risks.
As geopolitical risks increase in both frequency and complexity- in light of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the current war in the Gulf and the looming Sino-American confrontation in the Indo-Pacific - this gap between preparedness and exposure may prove costly. To discuss how the Political Risk industry developed, where it stands now, and where it might be heading, the Centre for Geopolitics is convening a conversation which will include Mike Reynolds, the co-founder of Hakluyt, and several other experts. This event is intended to be the first of a number of explorations of this topic.
