Join us on the fourth Tuesday of each month to delve into the subversive world of weird fiction.
Join us on the fourth Tuesday of each month to delve into the subversive world of weird fiction. We will be reading a mixture of genre staples from supernatural stalwarts like Edgar Allan Poe and M.R. James to the more contemporary contributions of Sayaka Murata and Julia Armfield.
For September, we’ll discuss The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey. Set on an imaginary Caribbean island, this tantalising tale of disruption brought about by a beautiful stranger marries mythical elements with the piercing realism of everyday life. Roffey’s novel was the Overall Winner of the Costa Book of the Year 2020, long-listed for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2021, and shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize 2021.
Content warning: themes of race and imperialism; graphic injury detail.
