The LEAP Workshop: Overcoming Impostor Syndrome will take place on 20 October 2026 in the Nihon Room at Pembroke College, Cambridge. This workshop addresses the feelings associated with impostor syndrome and aims to help participants silence their inner critic.
Silencing your inner critic: how to stop impostor syndrome from holding you back.
Have you ever had that feeling that you are a fraud, that you don’t belong here and at some point you will be ‘found out’? These thoughts and feelings are what is known as the impostor phenomenon (or most commonly referred to as impostor syndrome). Impostor syndrome is just one of many characteristics of the ‘inner critic’: an internal voice that judges, criticises, and often undermines our self-worth, abilities, and actions.
Impostor phenomenon impacts over 70% of people at some point in their life and can be magnified when:
You do or start something new
You are in the minority
You’re not being yourself
You’re experiencing a change or transition
Although an internalised narrative depicted by an individual's beliefs and experiences, the impact of the inner critic can prevent you from celebrating success, accepting praise, speaking up and stepping forward for new opportunities. It affects many Cambridge students during their studies, and also after graduation when embarking on careers.
If you resonate with having an inner critic or an imposter voice that holds you back in particular scenarios, join this interactive workshop to:
Discover more about the inner critics and impostor phenomenon and where they originate
Discover tools to build confidence and self-belief
Find ways to think more objectively about situations
Recognise how to reframe negative self-talk
