The Unicorn of Remote Sensing: Reconstructing Antarctic Glaciers using Historic Aerial Photographs

Eva Rowe is a PhD candidate at the Scott Polar Research Institute and British Antarctic Survey after completing her MPhil at SPRI in 2024. Her work involves identifying and digitising archived aerial photographs to build Digital Elevation Models and calculate the change in surface elevation, extent and area of Antarctic glaciers.

From Eva:

I'll introduce some of the oldest Antarctic datasets, collected across the continent throughout the 20th Century, in the decades following the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. I'll discuss the importance of these historic aerial photographs and their role in modern science. For me, these photographs provide the key to unlocking the past, enabling me to measure long-term change of Antarctic Glaciers, and subsequently their response to climate change and contributions to global sea level rise.

Tea & Talks are designed for a non-academic audience and offer the chance to learn something new in a friendly environment. Bring along a notepad (or just an open mind) and join us for a cuppa.
