The recitation of the Qur’an is an art that has always been savoured among the Muslim community across different sects and traditions. For many, it represents the oldest and highest form of Islamic art: the Prophet himself (peace be upon him) is reported to have loved hearing beautiful recitation of the Qur’an. What is less well-known is the diversity of this art form: the Qur’an has ten different modes of being recited. Shaykh Hameem, a master reciter of the Qur’an, will guide festival attendees, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, through this fascinating history and living tradition with beautifully-voiced demonstrations and accessible explanations.
