Delve into the intriguing history of beavers, from their near-complete extinction to contemporary restoration initiatives. Gain insights into their behaviours, biology, ecology, and potential impacts on ecosystems, coupled with an examination of their legal status and mitigation options. This training session will illuminate the basic biology, ecology, and behaviours of these captivating animals, now an integral part of our mammal assemblage.

While direct observation of beavers may pose challenges, we will equip you to decipher their distinctive field signs, offering valuable information on their habitat use and lifestyles. The course includes hands-on field activities to enhance your familiarity with these signs.

In addition to exploring the conservation status of the species, the session will discuss the ecological benefits and potential conflicts associated with beaver reintroduction. It touches on management solutions, empowering participants to contribute to the re-establishment of a connection with this once-widespread ecosystem engineer.

Join us for a day of immersive learning, combining theoretical knowledge with practical field experiences, as we navigate the complexities of beaver reintroduction and its implications for conservation and ecosystem restoration.

This one-day course is delivered in partnership with Beaver Trust - a nature restoration charity, established in September 2019. The course leaders with their expertise in conservation, ecology and land management will provide a comprehensive exploration of the Eurasian beaver and its return to Britain's waterways.

Evidence of attendance on this course and attendance on the CIEEM Beaver Survey Methods and Mitigation training course qualifies you to register for one of Natural England’s beaver management Class Licence’s (CL52 or CL51). Course level: 2 - Beginner level

Attendees will ideally have some basic understanding of the topic. The event will then allow them to consolidate pre-existing knowledge and develop their skills. (e.g. knowing that beavers are semi-aquatic mammals => being able to recognise the signs of their presence)

A CPD certificate will be available on completion of the course.
