Dying and Rising by Celyn of Gwent is a live solo immersive audiovisual performance combining electronic music, ethereal live voice, sound-reactive visuals and poetic monologues. The work is being newly adapted for fulldome presentation, expanding from its original format into a fully immersive spatial environment.
‘We will have no puff of smoke and bloodless resurrection.
We must tend a different garden from the poisoned soil.’
Rooted in an urgent artistic response to the climate crisis, the piece explores the intersection of ecology and identity in contemporary Britain through the perspective of a queer Welsh sonic artist and storyteller. It weaves together original songs, reinterpretations of traditional British Isles ballads, spoken word, and layered soundscapes incorporating urban field recordings.
Performed live, Dying and Rising integrates real-time electronic manipulation with a visual score created from processed footage filmed across Wales and London. The visuals are synchronised and driven through interactive software, allowing them to respond dynamically to the sonic material in performance.
The work has been developed with Mixing Engineer Helen Noir, alongside support from Help Musicians’ Next Level programme, R&D funding from Tŷ Cerdd in partnership with SHIFT Cardiff. Dying and Rising is touring Wales and the UK with the support of Arts Council of Wales, to coincide with its Autumn 2026 studio album release.
Designed for audiences interested in boundary-pushing audiovisual performance, LGBTQ+ perspectives in contemporary art, traditional music reinterpretation and climate-conscious storytelling, Dying and Rising offers a powerful, evolving live experience where sound and image are tightly interwoven in real time.
