Environmental aesthetics has been a growing field in the last century, and has attracted interest both from philosophers in other specialisms, such as ethics, and scientists in fields like biology, geology, and ecology, among others. However, it seems that its distinctiveness as a field of research, and its centrality in nature-valuing practices, remains understated, underestimated, and under-appreciated. While we are living in times where the environment always features on any sensible agenda, due in part to the unprecedented threat it faces, environmental aesthetics is still seen as an afterthought within a largely already marginal philosophical sub-discipline. This past year has also marked a period of significant transition for the discipline, with the passing of Holmes Rolston, III and Allen Carlson, and the retirement of Emily Brady.
The above calls for a radical rethinking of environmental aesthetics. This workshop will bring together some of the most prominent exponents and theorists working in environmental aesthetics, each of whom will give a talk on a fundamental topic. This will be followed by a roundtable workshop on the conference’s overarching theme––the place of environmental aesthetics in valuing the natural world––and concluded with reflections by Emily Brady.
