Pageants and Revels – Dr Juliette Wood, Cardiff University

Pageants and masques were important events at the Tudor and Jacobean courts. When Prospero says at the end of The Tempest that his life in exile, and by extension the play itself, was an ‘insubstantial pageant,’ contemporary audiences would have understood the performances to which he referred. This talk will illustrate early pageants and masques with contemporary drawings and descriptions of sets and costumes. It will be proceeded by dances of the period, and the dancers will be wearing costumes to add an extra dimension to our appreciation of how these wonderful performances were staged.

The event is free but booking is essential - refreshments can be purchased at the hall.
