Suicide Alertness Training will be held at Workington Leisure Centre on 23 September 2026. The workshop aims to teach life-saving skills to prevent suicide. The session is free to attend.
On average one person dies by suicide every 5 days in Cumbria. But suicides are preventable and we can all learn life saving skills.
We are proud to be working with GLL to provide face to face Suicide Alertness training throughout Cumbria.
This training is CPD accredited.
This CPD-accredited 3.5 hour face to face training session is aimed at anyone who wants to understand more about suicide, how to know when someone may be having thoughts of suicide, how to talk directly and comfortably about suicide, and what we can all do to offer practical support.
The session aims for participants to;
Be aware of the local and national context of suicide
Be aware of the importance of suicide awareness within the community and be more prepared to talk openly and honestly about suicide
Understand how stigma and societal and our own attitudes can have an impact
Understand the nature of thoughts of suicide. Appreciate the continuum of thoughts of suicide and the concept of ambivalence
understand the many and varied reasons that someone may think of suicide and be alert to the signs
Be able to ask direct questions about thoughts of suicide
Appreciate the importance of compassionate listening
Be aware of resources available
Understand the importance of assessing situation and safety planning
Around 1 in 4 of us will have thoughts of suicide during our lifetime. It is a common response to stressful and overwhelming life events. We believe that Suicide prevention is everyone’s business. That it is family, friends, colleagues, neighbours and those closest to us that are most able to understand when someone is at risk of suicide, and to support that person to take the first steps towards getting help.
This face to face session is delivered by our dedicated and experienced suicide prevention trainers. Participants also receive a PDF course worksheet and a post course handbook

Completion of the training will also qualify individuals for the countywide Orange Button scheme, for more information on this project please visit https://www.every-life-matters.org.uk/orange-button
