About This Event

A talk on working safely near or adjacent to a railway will take place on 8 June 2027 at the Village Hotel Maidstone. This event is intended for individuals over 18 and will cover the regulations and implications of working close to operational railways. Attendees will gain insights into Network Rail's approval processes and safety measures.

Are you working near or adjacent to a railway? What are the rules and implications?

Please note: this event is for over 18’s only.

Working close to an operational railway is subject to controls beyond normal construction requirements. Network Rail as a statutory authority have the right to put enforcement action on your site and stop works if you haven’t followed the correct procedures.

This presentation will provide you with a practical view of the Network Rail approvals landscape, the implications on your projects and what to do and when.

CONTENT

Why this matters?

Non-rail projects adjacent to railway assets can import risk into the operational railway. Ultimately if things go wrong it could endanger lives and cause serious disruption to the rail network impacting the economy, NHS, etc. In addition if engagement isn’t completed early enough it can have serious programme and cost implications.

Early rail-aware definition avoids late redesign, unplanned possessions, incomplete submissions and uncertainty over who owns assurance evidence.

Outcome

A clear approval route map, defined roles, submission requirements and real life experience.

· Why is it important to follow the process

· Understand when Network Rail involvement is likely to be triggered

· Who are Network Rail/ ASPRO and what are their powers

· The Roles in the approval Process

· Forms/ Approvals Process and how they align to RIBA Stages

· Project Examples

· Common failure points

· Minimum Requirements

Audience

Developers, architects, civil/structural designers, temporary works designers, planners, project managers and contractors who are not rail specialists but whose works interface with Network Rail assets.

This learning activity can contribute to your annual CPD return and should be logged accordingly.
