Discover the stories behind Maldon's Steam Tug Brent and the first pre-fabricated vessel.

Join us for an enthralling evening as Don Baines unveils the riveting history behind Maldon's iconic Steam Tug Brent – a true heritage gem and one of the last surviving “Tug Inshore Defence” vessels.

These innovative flat-pack ships, known as TIDS (Tug Inshore Defence), were ingeniously prefabricated by the Admiralty between 1942 and 1945, crafted in eight sections at eight different shipyards before being expertly welded together by teams of women.

Their legacy is etched into maritime history, having played a crucial role in Operation Overlord during the D-Day liberation of Europe. Operation Overlord was the codename for the Allied invasion of Normandy, launched on 6 June 1944. This massive military operation marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War in Europe, as Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation.

After the war, these versatile tugs found new purpose with the Port of London Authority, including TID 159, which was proudly renamed Brent. Brent became a stalwart of the Thames, bravely dredging up unexploded ordnance and later embarking on family adventures that spanned from the heart of London across the North Sea to the Netherlands.

Now, after more than half a century as a beloved Maldon landmark,Steam Tug Brent is set to be reborn! In 2024, thanks to a prestigious National Lottery Heritage Fund grant and the unwavering dedication of the Steam Tug Brent Trust and the National Historic Ships UK, resilience work is underway to return her to her former glory. Brent is not only one of just three surviving TIDS, but also a living testament to Britain's innovative maritime heritage.

Don't miss this chance to immerse yourself in the captivating story of Steam Tug Brent and discover why she continues to inspire maritime enthusiasts and the local community alike. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking for a remarkable evening out, this talk promises tales of wartime ingenuity, daring adventures, and a restoration journey that is shaping the future of British maritime heritage.

Secure your seat for an unforgettable journey through time and celebrate the living legacy of Steam Tug Brent!
